In an attempt to turn his life around, Jelly Roll has planned to start on a new journey to lose 250 pounds. To help him, he enlisted the help of a personal trainer, Gary Breka, who considers himself to be a bio-hacker.

While appearing on the Full Send Podcast, Gary opened up more about what it’s like to work with Jelly Roll, and just how excited he is to start on the journey. “I am so excited to be on this journey with him, and he’s been very vulnerable about it too. He said ‘You know Gary, this is the first time that I’ve felt like my weight is killing me.’”

On top of Jelly Roll’s willingness to put a real effort into his health, Gary also said that he felt incredibly inspired by him and his music. “I feel like that guy’s got a real message for the world. If you really listen to the lyrics in his songs, man it is deep.”

“And you know that those lyrics are coming from a story that is very visceral, very authentic, very real.”

The two of them have both decided that they would work toward the goal of losing 250 pounds first, and then reevaluate when he finally reaches that goal. “We’re going to strip about 250 pounds off of him in the next 12 to 14 months. 250 pounds. He weighed in at 494.” On top of doing all of the classic weight-loss work like eating healthy and exercising, Jelly Roll is also attempting to train for a 5k.

Jelly Roll Plans to Run His 5k in May

While speaking to People about his journey, he said that he’s really been enjoying the change in his lifestyle and has already seen promising results. “It’s going really good, man. This is the first week in six weeks I haven’t got my miles in just because the Grammys week’s been so rough, but I have been getting in the sauna.”

“As long as I’m training for this thing, I’m just shedding weight. I’ve been eating crazy good, so I’m excited.”

Despite his excitement and determination, Jelly Roll also isn’t letting himself have overly ambitious expectations. As of now, he walks about a 21-minute mile but plans to get it down to a shorter mile in time.

“I don’t know if ‘running’ is going to be the word, but I’m definitely going to get the 3.1 miles done — probably a brisk power walk. My goal is to be able to do a 15-minute mile.”

The 5k that he plans on participating in is set to happen in May, so it’s not too far away at this point. The idea was first brought up by comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura on their 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast. But, Jelly Roll appreciates the challenge.

“Kyle from the [comedy troupe] Nelk Boys convinced me that I could make it to the 5K by May if I dedicated myself to it. I believe in him. I believe in myself.” Now we’ll just have to wait for more updates on his health journey and to see how well the 5k goes for him.
